Just 15 numbers tell the history of the past seven years, in which a once wealthy and relatively secure United States near-bankrupted itself, pursued chimeras and funded chaos-causing wars that left it poorer and less safe then ever before. After 9/11, the Bush administration almost instantly launched its crusade against Islam and then the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, all under the rubric of the “global war on terror”. 15 numbers from the military expenditures to the subprime foreclosures to the number of suicide bombings in 2007 to the number of countries that have experienced protests or riots in recent months due to soaring food prices. "Brazil: Setting An Important Precedent For Indigenous Lands" by Marta Caravantes
An imminent decision by Brazil's Supreme Court on the demarcation of the Raposa Serra do Sol indigenous reservation in the Amazon jungle region has the country's native communities on edge, because of the precedent it will set. The 1.7 million hectare reserve was officially demarcated by the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in 2005. Now the highest court may give open access to the rice growers. Read more…

"Unions Back Plan that Could Kill Off Real Health Care Reform" by Kip Sullivan
If Barack Obama wins the fall election, he will be under pressure to establish universal health insurance. This will be due not only to public disgust with the current health care system, but to the hard work of organizations dedicated to universal health insurance. However, the most powerful of these groups, including the AFL-CIO and Service Employees International Union, are promoting a solution that won't fix the problem. Their plan would fatten the insurance industry, and put the industry in stronger political position. Read more…
